Pierre Dulaine is a consummate competitive ballroom dancer and trainer; dressed in his top hat and tails, he looks like royalty. But when Jason Rockwell, a troubled inner city teenager, assaults him one evening, Pierre realizes that something is missing from his life. Rather than press charges, he volunteers to teach ballroom dancing at Jason's high school.In his attempt to improve the students' lives, Pierre finds a hook to get them interested in his teachings: there is a ballroom dancing competition with a first place prize of $5,000 - a lot of money to kids who don't have much to begin with. He begins to break through to them, showing them how dancing can give them inner strength and grace, and they, in turn, show him the energy and vitality of hip-hop.
